Here’s a recipe for a wholesome, old fashioned protein-packed oatmeal breakfast – Joe’s favorite (besides donuts). What makes this simple recipe different is that we use old fashioned, 100% whole grain oatmeal (not instant oatmeal) and we add in a high-quality protein powder. As active people, we try to be deliberate about breakfast and not make it an afterthought. We aim to have at least 20g of protein and a good amount of carbohydrates for energy. Oatmeal is an easy way to get what we need in 10 minutes or less. A cup of coffee for caffeine and we’re good to go!
Ingredients:
1 cup of old fashioned 100% whole grain oatmeal
2 cups of water – more or less depending upon how lumpy you like your oatmeal
2 scoops of high quality protein powder (1 serving size)
1/2 cup of fruit (this time of year I like to use diced apples)
1 tsp cinnamon
Optional – you may want to add a natural sweetener like maple syrup or locally grown honey
Directions:
Bring water to a full boil, reduce heat to simmer and add in oatmeal. Cook oatmeal for 5-8 minutes. Add in fruit whenever you like, depending upon how cooked you want it to be. When I use apples, I like them to be cooked well. If I add berries, I add them near the end of cooking time so they don’t get too mushy. Near the end of cooking time, add in the protein powder and stir well. Makes two servings. Sprinkle cinnamon atop each serving.
